How Do Burns Occur In a Car Accident?

Injuries from car accidents in Los Angeles can range from minor to severe. Whiplash or collision are often mentioned as causes of traumatic brain injury. (TBI). Neck injuries, fractured bones, and internal hemorrhaging are all frequent injuries.

Burns are less prevalent than some of the injuries described above, however, they can result in exponentially difficult recoveries when individuals are strong enough to survive. Here’s what you should know.

Reasons for Burns in Car Accidents

Most automotive designs take the risk of burns into account and make an effort to reduce this risk as much as possible. However, because motor vehicles involve heat and a fuel source, the risk unfortunately cannot be fully eliminated.

While some battery-powered and hybrid cars have caught on fire due to malfunctioning electrical systems, gas-powered vehicles are at a much higher risk of catching on fire. These automobiles can experience fuel leaks, engine overheating, and other issues that raise the probability of combustion.

Burn Treatment

If you were burned in a car accident, you may or may not be taken to a special burn hospital depending on how much of your body is burned and/or how deep the burns are. Many hospitals don’t have the special equipment and sterile facilities needed to keep burn patients safe, warm, and hydrated while they heal.

Treatment may consist of antibiotics, skin grafting, wound debridement, and other intense, invasive procedures. In many cases, burns can cause permanent scarring, which may need to be repaired with cosmetic surgery, especially if a person has burns on their face, neck, or hands.

Burn Complications

Burn injuries are at an incredibly high risk of infection. The skin is the body’s largest organ and serves not only to protect the muscles, organs, and bones, but also regulates the body’s temperature and keeps pathogens at bay. When the skin is severely damaged, the body is no longer able to effectively fight off diseases, infections, etc.
