What Happens to the Brain During an Automobile Accident?

Car accidents can cause severe, debilitating, and even life threatening injuries. A common but serious result of a motor vehicle collision is a traumatic brain injury, or a TBI. Here’s what happens to the human brain when it’s injured in a car crash and what you can do to get help recovering the damages you incurred as a result of the accident.

Loss of Consciousness

Often, a car accident victim that has experienced a blow to the head will lose consciousness. This may be for a short period of time, or the person may slip into a coma.

Swelling of the Brain

Next, the body’s natural inflammatory response begins. This is usually a good thing and redness, swelling, and pain are normal. When this occurs in the brain however, only so much swelling can take place before the tissue begins to press up against the inside of the skull. If the brain continues swelling beyond this point, it can damage itself.

Damage to Blood Vessels

When the brain swells so much that it continues to push against the skull, the pressure begins to cut off essential blood supply to the brain tissue. This results in death of the tissue, which can quickly cause a person to begin losing function depending on where the injury is located.

Seizures

Seizures may begin to occur as swelling continues and tissue starts to die. They’re caused by sudden, irregular electrical activity in the brain and causes a number of dramatic symptoms. Individuals with seizures resulting from a TBI can experience severe and rapid jerking of the muscles, unresponsiveness, visual disturbances, angry outbursts, and more.

Hydrocephalus

Increased pressure inside the skull can cause cerebrospinal fluid to accumulate, resulting in a condition called hydrocephalus. This typically manifests with worsening dizziness, double vision, headaches, confusion, and cognitive impairment. In many cases, the fluid must be manually drained to reduce pressure on the brain and damage it causes.
